What should be on a high school college checklist?

Four categories in every grade: academics (course rigor and GPA), activities (depth and leadership), testing (PSAT, then SAT or ACT, plus AP/IB), and college work (list building, visits, recommendations, essays, and financial aid). What changes by grade is the emphasis, not the categories.

Is it too late to start if my student is already a junior?

No. Junior year is the highest-leverage year in the process, so starting there still puts you ahead of the deadlines that matter. The realistic adjustment is that you're working two lists at once — this year's items and anything unfinished from 9th and 10th — so prioritize testing, recommendations, and essay drafting first.

What is the single most commonly missed item?

Take the most challenging courses you can handle well — rigor matters, but a B in an honors class you're drowning in is worse than an A in the standard version.
Map the four-year course sequence now, especially in math and world language. Course prerequisites are the most common reason a junior can't take the class they need.
Learn how your school calculates weighted vs unweighted GPA, and which courses carry extra weight.
Fix study habits early — a bad semester in 9th grade sits in your transcript for four years.

Activities & summers

Try widely this year. Freshman year is the only year where breadth costs you nothing.
Pick two or three you'd stay with for four years. Depth over time is what actually reads as commitment.
Start a simple running record of what you did, when, and how many hours — you will not remember this in 12th grade.

Testing

No formal testing required. Some schools offer the PSAT 8/9 as a low-stakes baseline.
Focus on reading volume and math fundamentals — these drive test scores more than any prep course does later.

Colleges, essays & aid

Nothing formal. Visit a campus if one is nearby, just to make the idea concrete.
Start noticing what subjects you actually like. That's the earliest useful input into a college list.

The mistake to avoid in freshman year

Treating freshman year as 'the year that doesn't count.' It counts in the cumulative GPA, and it determines which courses you're eligible for as a junior.

Work the year you're in

Don't try to complete all four grades at once. Open your current grade, finish what's realistic this semester, and glance at the next grade so nothing surprises you.

Decide who tracks what

The most common breakdown is a student and a parent each assuming the other is watching the deadlines. Split the list explicitly: students own courses, activities, and writing; parents own visits, forms, and money.

Revisit it every quarter

Four times a year is enough. Anything that hasn't moved in two consecutive reviews is either not going to happen or needs to be handed to someone else.
