What actually moves the needle
Lever 1
An upward grade trend in honors and AP coursework is the single strongest academic signal. One extra AP with an A often moves your band more than +50 SAT points.
Lever 2
If you submit a score, aim above the school's 50th-percentile published range — not just inside it. Below-median scores hurt more than no score helps.
Lever 3
Two or three deep, demonstrated commitments beat a long list of clubs. Leadership, impact, and continuity over years all read clearly to admissions readers.
